This article discusses the reconstruction of stop types for Proto-Indo-European (PIE) and its putative precursors Proto-Indo-Anatolian (PIA) and Proto-Indo-Uralic (PIU). First the hypothesis of Kloekhorst (2016) is discussed. He has argued that PIA had the same type of quantity-based fortis-lenis contrast as Proto-Anatolian, and that the voice-based system reconstructed for PIE was a common innovation of the non-Anatolian branches. This proposal is evaluated from the perspective of diachronic phonological typology, with the result that the opposite hypothesis is more probable, i.e. the PIA system was rather like the PIE one, and Anatolian innovated. In the second part, the PIA system is compared to that of its potentially nearest relative Proto-Uralic (PU). To explain the rather strong difference between the three different stop series in PIA vs. only one series in PU it is proposed that the PIA implosives (traditional mediae) may correspond to PU sonorants rather than stops, especially nasals, as shown by potential equations. Since a change from implosives to sonorants seems to be more probable than vice versa, PIU is tentatively reconstructed with implosives. Additional similarities of PIA and PU are given in an appendix.
