In the nine general councils surveyed, theologians played various roles, ranging from witnesses and advisers to full voting members, either as procurators for others or as theologians in their own right. The various reasons offered to explain these shifts are here evaluated. Was the changing status of theologians determined by the needs of each council and their own behavior? Was it a matter of shifting ecclesiologies and a perceived return to ancient norms? Was their status inversely proportional to the bishops' theological competency? Or was it only the terminology used to describe or mask their role which really changed?
