Palestinian economic development can be reframed within the context of a century-old conflict between Palestinian national self-determination and the Zionist nationalist project. My alternative narrative concurs that the “Palestinian economy” is one of two distinct economic models which coexist within the historic territory of Palestine but without any pretense of parity or catching-up. One is the globalized, industrialized, financialized Jewish economy of the State of Israel, and the other—within its envelope—the Arab regional economies that have survived. However, the real “economy of Palestine” today is neither homogenous nor a coherent entity. It is constituted by diverging peripheral Arab regions, within pre-1967 Israel and in the areas occupied since—at least five noncontiguous, enclave economies, scattered from the north to the south of the area under sovereignty of the State of Israel.
