This chapter addresses the character of Nietzsche's naturalism in light of some recent challenges to naturalistic readings of him, in particular those that take causation and causal explanation as central to naturalism. The first half discusses some general considerations pertaining to the topic, before turning to two recent discussions of naturalism. One, Richard Schacht's, agrees that Nietzsche is a naturalist but is suspicious of placing causation at its centre. However, this chapter argues that Schacht is conflating the notion of causation in general with a more specific mechanical metaphysic of causation about which Nietzsche is sceptical. It then turns to discuss and reject Clark and Dudrick's contention that Nietzsche embraces irreducible normativity and that this is incompatible with naturalism.
