In France, Patrice Leconte is probably best known for his popular comedies such as Les Bronzes (1978) and its sequel Les Bronzes font du ski (1979). Abroad, and especially in the United States, his name was perhaps not as familiar until the end of the 1980s when he directed Monsieur Hire (1988) and Le Mari de la coiffeuse (1990), the two films most often mentioned by Anglo-Saxon critics. Ridicule is one of his most recent films and it is his first incursion into the genre of the period film. It is set at the end of the eighteenth century, six years before the French Revolution, and its plot is linear and straightforward
