What is happening to us when we experience a powerful emotion? Is pathos primarily an ethical or a medical concept - or does it admit of a coherent psycho-physical account? Galen provides a particularly fruitful site for the investigation of these questions, as both a prominent participant in the philosophical discourse on the emotions and a medical theorizer of the relationship between pathe psuches and physical and physiological phenomena. This paper explores Galen's physiological and ethical approach to the emotions on the basis of a wide range of Galenic texts, while at the same time situating his conception of pathos within the philosophical tradition, in particular in relation to Plato, Platonism and the Stoics. It identifies in Galen's thought both a strong parallelism between the accounts of 'body' and 'soul' functions and pathologies and a strong understanding of the pathe as themselves physical events.
