This paper examines Euenus' (8b, Theogn. 667–82) ship of state allegory and compares it to that developed by Socrates in Plato's Republic 6. Of the ship of state allegories present in the extant archaic and classical Greek poetic traditions (Archilochus 105, 106? IEG, Alcaeus 208, 6 V, Solon 12? IEG, Aeschylus Seven against Thebes and Euenus 8b), although most commentaries on Plato focus on the Aeschylean parallels, this study proposes to demonstrate that a greater proximity is to be found between the imagery of Socrates and that of Euenus, and discusses the wider implications of this intertext, given the role of Euenus' persona in the Platonic dialogues.
