Does higher education currently provide fertile soil for emerging adults’ spiritual growth or does it create a thorny environment that starves it? This chapter explores the answer to this question in four areas: (1) the impact of higher education on student religious belief and practice; (2) religion in the co-curricular dimension of secular campuses; (3) religion in the curricular dimension of secular institutions; and (4) the status of religious colleges and universities. Overall, we find emerging adults entering higher education will find a complicated landscape when it comes to religion and spirituality. On the one hand, religion appears to be thriving within these multiple fronts. On the other hand, some areas show signs that certain kinds of religious scholarship, practice, and expression prove unwelcome in the academy.
