This chapter presents Frank Kermode's second lecture which focuses on change and chance and their roles in canon formation. Like the "great statute of the general Du Puy" in Wallace Steven's poem, Kermode argues that "texts too must change, or rather, we must choose to grant them the blessing of change, for that alone will save them from their only other possible fate, namely to be rubbish in the end." Kermode understands this process of change from the arguments developed by Gerald Bruns and Gadamer. Kermode asserts that "changes in the canon obviously reflect changes in ourselves and other culture. It is a register of how our historical self-understandings are formed and modified.".
