This article offers a critique of niche diplomacy using critical theory. The critique is based on the presumption that all policy is informed by a set of ethical and philosophical assumptions. Smith suggests that careful consideration of niche diplomacy is particularly necessary because it comes with a political agenda that legitimizes the narrowing of Canadian foreign policy in such a way that the credibility of foreign policy initiatives could be undermined. The critique examines the concept, practice, limitations, contradictions, and the long term viability of niche diplomacy. Smith concludes that Canadian foreign policy should not be dominated by niche diplomacy or similar concepts that promote a balance sheet mentality and shallow commitments
