Nyansene i begrepene om det prekære blir sjelden helt synlig, noe som er empirisk og teoretisk uheldig. Artikkelen sorterer prekærbegrepenes (prekaritet, prekarisering, prekariatet) teoretiske antakelser og visualiserer et uforutsigbart teoretisk terreng ved å kaste lys over hvordan innholdet i begrepet om det prekære har endret seg. Artikkelen illustrerer fire teoretiske distinksjoner og plaserer prekærbegrepene i en bredere arbeidslivsteoretisk ramme. Hva som er ansett som prekært er kontekstuelt avhengig, og som sosiologisk instrument må det settes i relasjon til det som betraktes som norm.
