This journal has recently 1 Davidsen-Nielsen 1976, Hans F. Nielsen 1982: 79–84, Davidsen-Nielsen 1982, and Hans F. Nielsen's ‘Final Remarks’ 1982:96f. been the forum of a discussion concerning the deviations from the normal pattern of the Germanic consonant shift, i.e. the cases of, as it seems, unshifted voiceless stops presented by the Gmc. clusters /sp, st, sk, ft, xt/. According to Niels Davidsen-Nielsen (henceforth ND-N) 1976, the second member of the IE (pre-Gmc.) clusters /sp, st, /sk, skw, pt, /kt, kwt/ was in each case neutral with regard to the opposition voiced: voiceless and therefore fell under neither of the rules that shifted (1) tenues to spirants and (2) (unaspirated) mediae to tenues, but, precisely for that reason, remained unchanged.
