THE search for roots of racial segregation has occupied attention of scholars since appearance of C. Vann Woodward's The Strange Career of Jim Crow in I955. Interpreting separate but equal legislation enacted by southern states after I887 as a fundamental turning point in region's race relations, Woodward wrote of relative recency of segregation and claimed that identify system with ante bellum South was to forget nature of relations between races under old regime.' In a new introduction a I957 edition, Woodward carefully qualified his thesis by admitting antiquity of white supremacist thought, proscriptions imposed upon free Negroes before Civil War, and exclusion of Negroes from many public facilities after Appomattox.
