The growth of suburban commerce in France. Over the last fifteen years, a veritable commercial revolution has taken place in France. It was in the urban peripheries, which had previously been geatly underequipped in sales facilities, that the greatest growth took place, with new forms of commerce springing up. The traditional nodes of commerce suffered competition from large stores and shopping centres, which were based on new shopping styles and the motor car. This new commerce has brought about economie concentration to the advantage of the large distribution empires. It has also led to the emergence of unexpected competition between the town centre and the suburbs, and has, by way of reaction, awakened innovative vitality in town centres where commerce is threatened.
