Marcel Dorigny, The "Société des Amis des Noirs" and colonial projects in Africa. The "Société des Amis des Noirs", founded in 1788, campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade and of slavery, but was not at all against colonisation. Or rather it envisaged the complete integration of the nation regenerated by the rights of man and envisaged transferring the plantation economy to Africa, without slavery. The continent would thus become a French breadbasket and market and its inhabitants would be educated in the new principles of reason and liberty. This project can be seen as the préfiguration of the republican version of the second French colonisation in the 19th Century.
