This chapter critically examines and analyzes the implications of the Internet for the globalization of art markets. Although art markets have been local exchanges, this localization has recently been challenged by the rise of the digital medium and online firms that promise to change the dynamics of both supply and demand. Using qualitative data from case studies of three online art firms and building on existing theories about the nature of art production and exchange, this chapter outlines a generalizable framework that has implications for the globalization of markets for art. It suggests that due to the nature of art works, functions performed by intermediaries that possess specific properties are constitutive of markets for art. The success of efforts to globalize the contemporary art world through a smooth transition to online art markets, therefore, would require adaptation of these constitutive, structural elements to the digital medium.
