The chapter takes up the critique of the Volksgemeinschaft approach voiced by Ian Kershaw and emphasizes its value. It stresses the epistemological shift in perspective in the historiography of National Socialism towards a cultural history of ‘the political’, which it entails; it makes clear that the Volksgemeinschaft approach does not presume an unchallenged consensus in German society, as maintained by its critics, but rather reckons with a diversity of opinions and behavioural strategies; and it underlines its potential for understanding National Socialist society as ‘work in progress’, that is as an ongoing project.
