Our aim in this chapter is to give a clear and comprehensive account of the idea of citizenship in contemporary China. We intentionally avoid raising and discussing different interpretations of citizenship. We begin with a historical development of the concept of citizenship in China, then sketch the relationship between citizenship and nationality, and we explain how to guarantee the political rights and liberties of citizens in China. We close with some comments on globalization and citizenship.
