I initially drafted this chapter subsequent to a conference on "Economy and Society in Southeastern China," East Asia Program, Cornell University, 2–3 October 1993. The conference presentations of Murray Rubinstein and Kenneth Dean set me thinking, both about the issues their papers raise regarding the processes of what might be termed "identity construction" and about the ways identity issues have emerged, more broadly in China studies and elsewhere. I found Dean's and Rubinstein's papers particularly interesting, because each focuses on the study of religious cults in Fujian that are counterparts of cults that have been the objects of much of my professional research and writing. Moreover, their papers (see also Dean n.d.a and n.d.b) confirm that local cults continue to play (or, at least, are emerging to play again) a constitutive role in the formation, perpetuation, and transformation of local and regional identities in Fujian.KeywordsAboriginal PeoplePopular CultureIdentity PoliticsSocial SolidarityIdentity IssueThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
