In this chapter, Jens Zimmermann first offers a brief definition of humanism as a cultural, educational movement before moving to a historical and theological sketch of Christianity's relation to humanism. The main purpose of this chapter is to show that contrary to a common misconception, Christianity and humanism are not mortal enemies. Rather, when viewed in light of humanism's religious roots, Christianity may be described as a kind of humanism.
