The year 1989 was rich in commemorations. France launched an ostentatious bicentennial celebration of the Revolution that had replaced a political-social order founded on a rigid hierarchical tripartition with a more flexible one based on the individual. The same year in Israel (5750 in the Hebrew calendar) witnessed the centennial celebration of a more discrete but major revolution; one that, with the renaissance of Hebrew, had provided the worldwide multilingual Jewish Diaspora with relative, although growing linguistic unity, but above all with symbolic coherence.KeywordsJewish CommunityJewish IdentityJewish SocietyHebrew LanguageJewish WorldThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
