In Western philosophical traditions, justice generally refers to overarching, fundamental, abstract, universal principles that can (or should) adjudicate the distribution of goods and benefits, rights and duties, services, obligations, and opportunities. Whether based on principles of theology, philosophy, politics, or economics, justice requires that distribution and retribution accord with rational, neutral, objective judgments that assure fair, equitable, and impartial treatment for everyone.
