Set amidst the upheavals of contemporary Vietnam – the Declaration of Independence in 1945, the end of the French Indochina War in 1954, the North–South division until 1975, and post-reunification border wars – Lê Minh Khuê's Tropical Monsoon weaves together the separate destinies of its characters into a single tapestry. From one family but belonging to two different ideological camps, her characters are caught in a never-ending vortex of destruction. Beyond vengeance within the family, where ‘an eye for an eye’ is no metaphor, this gripping tale focuses on the fratricidal nature of the Vietnam War and offers a critical perspective on contemporary society through the lens of justice. At the same time, the narrative foregrounds the role of mothers as key custodians of wartime memory, whose experiences and silences reveal a gendered transmission of trauma across generations. In what manner does the theme of civil war illustrated in this work represent one of the constants in the history of Vietnam? Does the recourse to revenge reflect the failure of a powerless judicial system within an authoritarian regime where civil society struggles to emerge? What message does the author convey concerning pardon, memory and history?
