The handle of a fabric is crucial for the success of a garment, along with their appearance and design. Scientists have been working on objectively quantifying and standardizing fabric handle esthetics. The Leeds University Fabric Handle Evaluation System (LUFHES) is used to measure and assess fabric handle properties of numerous textile materials in an objective manner. This objective assessment allows for novel applications that combine machine learning and artificial intelligence and immersive technologies with textile industry applications to assist designers and technologists in offering sustainable solutions to the industry by reducing the trials in the production process or eliminating sample swaps between designers. This paper is a top level description of projects aligned with one of the Future Fashion Factory (FFF) core research themes related to the “Digital Quantification and Communication of the Aesthetics of Fabrics” and is funded by FFF and LITAC.
