This article examines the differing reasons behind why the French philosopher Simone Weil (1909–1943) and the Jansenist polemicist Antoine Arnauld (1612–1694) recommended abstaining from the Eucharist, illustrating the continuities and ruptures of Catholic sacramental theology from Augustine to the modern era.
