This chapter looks at the vogue for cultural pilgrimage among the ruling class, a vogue that developed during the Antonine Age, particularly in the Eastern half of the Empire. Among the centres for this activity it considers are major sanctuaries such as Delphi, the Asklepieion of Pergamon, and the Artemision of Ephesos, sites of expensive dedications by members of the Roman elite, and also remote, rural sanctuaries of the sort established by Aelius Aristides and Herodes Atticus. The chapter explores the reasons for this development, which may have included rivalry between elites belonging to different cities and a change in attitudes to religion in the Antonine Age.
