This chapter demonstrates how regional analysis can identify patterns in the economies of the Hellenistic period, and how the identification of regions based on non-economic factors can serve as a test of the ‘reality’ of regional entities — and thus regional and inter-regional trade — constructed on economic criteria alone. It first reviews some of the models for defining regions that have been employed in geography that might be useful to historians of the Hellenistic economy. These are: geography, ethnicity, and polity. It then applies the distribution of certain material objects to draw rough boundaries of possible regions — and, by extension, sub-regional (local) and super-regional (interregional) economic activity.
