This chapter begins with an overview of the nature and chronology of the activity of the mint of Pergamon from the establishment of coin production under Philetairos to the death of Attalos III. Through a detailed examination of the hoard evidence for the coinage of the second century bc, it argues for a late date for the beginning of the cistophoric coinage (in the 160s bc). The cistophoroi, it is argued, should be seen not as the sole currency of a purported Attalid closed currency area enveloping the whole kingdom, but rather as an epichoric coinage designed to serve the monetary needs of the core inland territories of the Attalid kingdom, as well as to discourage the export of silver from this area.
