This chapter explores the interrelationship of narrative and truth, focusing on such issues as the differences between non-fictional and fictional narratives, the temporal dimension of narrative, the tension between narrative reconstruction and historical causation, the under-determinacy of the past, and the binding function of narrative. Acknowledging the irrevocably interpretive nature of narrative, it is also suggested herein that the question of truth remains paramount in non-fictional and fictional texts alike. Well-traveled though this question has been, there still remains ample opportunity for exploring it further and discerning more clearly what it might actually mean in the context of narrative inquiry.
