This chapter demonstrates how changes over time in the configuration of Roman shopfronts — particularly their doorways and thresholds — can inform us about ambulatory traffic and the Roman urbanite's experience of the street. To that end, it moves beyond the Vesuvian cities to Ostia, Rome, and elsewhere, as well as from the first into the second century ce in a bid to relate the developments in the arrangement of Roman shopfronts into a broader cultural, political, and historical framework.
