This chapter examines the fragments of Theopompus of Chios from ancient Greece as examples of the writing of paradigmatic history, or history structured around exempla with a moral applicability, and hence with a paideutic purpose. Theopompus authored three histories: a two-book epitome of Herodotus, a twelve-book Hellenica continuing Thucydides's account of the Peloponnesian War, and a voluminous history centred on Philip II. This chapter considers the place of epitēdeumata in Theopompus's conception of history, and of paradigmatic universalism in particular, suggesting that this is a particular preoccupation of the age of Plato.
