When emperor Augustus died on 19 August AD 14, one of the documents he was said have left to posterity was a 'list' or 'summary' of his achievements — known to the modern world as the Res Gestae. It was the emperor's wish that the Res Gestae be engraved on bronze plaques which were to be placed in front of his mausoleum. Soon, however, Augustus' index achieved an even greater publicity. It was subsequently copied in cities across the empire; and these provincial copies were furnished with a heading which comprised a single sentence and which was placed above the main text of each inscription. This chapter considers translations of the text of that heading.
