The participatory nature of the symbol in Schelling is radicalized through Merleau-Ponty’s notion of chiasm. While chiasm and institution are terms explicitly intended to surpass correlation and constitution, they can also be deployed to surpass Schelling’s notion of tautegory by which he defines the symbol. Chiasm manifests the negative principle that has thus far been characterized as elemental non-being, a principle that is essential for any full account of cosmogonic symbolics, that is, the endogenous development of beings from a symbolically charged milieu.
