This article examines Irish poetry in the Victorian period. It considers the work of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose interest in prosodic innovation and native mythology illustrate the poetry of Ireland in this period. It discusses how the efforts of Irish poets such as J. J. Callanan, Aubrey de Vere, William Allingham, Samuel Ferguson, Oscar Wilde, and J. M. Synge to incorporate Irish elements into the formal and thematic resources of poetry placed them at the centre of English poetry.
