Condorcet's strengths and weaknesses have been well summed up by the editors of his most famous work, the Esquisse d'un tableau historique (1794). They feel that he is neglected today largely because his direct, uncomplicated character offers little reward to the modern critic.1 An unfashionable man in the present Age of Ambiguity, he lacks those self-doubts and contradictions which we prefer to look for. Yet the vigour of a mind firmly possessed of certain principles about human justice and dignity, enunciating them clearly and arguing the practical consequences consistently throughout his life, has much to command the admiration of critics in any age, especially those who concern themselves with the intellectual's commitment in society.KeywordsFrench RevolutionCoeducational SchoolSecular EducationModern CriticFrench WriterThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
