This chapter examines Victorian periodical Christmas stories about emigration. It argues that this highly popular literature was essentially cohesive in nature and utilized the medium of print to activate an affective English national imaginary that served to contain the destabilizing potential of migration. The first section of the chapter draws upon a range of Christmas texts in order to elucidate the relationship between emigration and nation as mediated by print. The second section moves on to explore the Dickensian emigration-themed frame story, which incorporates a close reading of Charles Dickens’s ‘The Wreck of the Golden Mary’ (1856). The final section examines the large range of mid-Victorian texts written about Christmas in Australia, with close reference to Anthony Trollope’s ‘Harry Heathcote of Gangoil’ (1873).
