Eight months after Aquino’s election the political scene remained as precarious as ever. Socially, there was continuing unrest among the people as more families slid into the extremes of poverty; and, economically, the country showed no sign of recovery. On the surface, Aquino retained much of the popularity enjoyed at the time of her election, the media reporting her crowd-drawing appearances with all the orchestration that accompanied parallel publicity during the Marcos regime. Certainly there was an increase in the number of tourists visiting the Philippine Islands during the summer of 1986 and, in most towns and cities, the levels of tension experienced by people in the street were reduced. The Philippines stands poised for the next move in the complex political game being played by Aquino, Enrile, Ramos, the AFP, the NPA and the USA.
