Natürlich war Aristoteles der eigentliche Gründer der später ›Peripatos‹ genannten Schule. Diese Bezeichnung und diejenige ihrer Anhänger als ›Peripatetiker‹ kam vermutlich schon während des Scholarchats (Schulleitung) durch Aristoteles' unmittelbaren Nachfolger Theophrast auf, der dann auch im materiellen und juristischen Sinne den Bestand der Schule durch den Erwerb eines Grundstückes auf dem oder in der Nähe des Lykeion in Athen sichern konnte (Schorn 2003). Die späteren Scholarchen verfügten über das Grundstück und das vorhandene Sachvermögen. Erster Nachfolger in der Schulleitung war Straton aus Lampsakos, der es nach seinem Tod (vermutlich 270/67 v.Chr.) dem in der Troas geborenen Lykon hinterließ, der sie wiederum bis zu seinem Tod (etwa 226 v.Chr.) innehatte. Ist bereits unklar, wer Lykons Nachfolger war (vielleicht Ariston aus Keos), so versiegt die Geschichte des Peripatos vollends mit Andronikos von Rhodos, der bis in die Mitte des 1. Jh.s v.Chr. gelebt hat und gelegentlich als zehnter bzw. elfter Scholarch erwähnt wird. Nach der Eroberung Athens durch Sulla im Jahre 86 v. Chr. scheint der Peripatos, jedenfalls als Institution, erloschen zu sein. Umstritten ist, inwiefern die Bezeichnung einzelner Persönlichkeiten des 3. und 2. Jh.s v.Chr. als ›Peripatetiker‹ eine eher ideelle oder eher faktische Schulzugehörigkeit meint. Mancher Name wird mit dem Peripatos in Verbindung gebracht, wie etwa der des berühmten Astronomen Aristarch von Samos (erste Hälfte des 3. Jh.s v. Chr.), ohne dass hierfür wirklich sicherer Grund zur Verfügung steht.
