This chapter examines the inscription discovered in the ancient Greek city of Chios and what it tells about Aegean politics in the third century, as well as its implications for our understanding of Rome's involvement in the East. It presents a somewhat corrected version (the result of frequent contemplation by W. G. Forrest between 1952 and 1967 and a detailed reanalysis by P. S. Derow in 1979), along with some commentary and arguments about its date and immediate context. It cites the connection between Chios and Delphi, the Chian decision to establish a festival in honour of Roma, and the circumstances of the Delphian decree for Hermocles, among other clues borne out by the analysis of the inscription.
