This chapter considers the two best-known collaborative commentaries on Horace’s Odes: that of Adolf Kiessling and Richard Heinze, where Kiessling’s commentary of 1884–7 (part of a complete commentary on Horace) was re-edited in a second and further editions by the latter after the former’s death, and that of Robin Nisbet and Margaret Hubbard (Odes 1, 1970 and 2, 1980) and Robin Nisbet and Niall Rudd (Odes 3, 2004). It looks at how Kiessling’s original was modified by Heinze in the light of the latter’s own interests, and at the varying dynamics of actual collaboration between Nisbet and his two partners, incorporating testimony from the surviving players.
