The awakening of modern Asia in the early years of the twentieth century was a time of promise and portent. Japan emerged as a muscular power of large ambition. There was an epochal revolution in China. Incipient nationalism coursed beneath the deceptive surface calm of British India. Such developments were to have profound implications, not only for the British Empire, but for the further course of Western civilisation itself. Yet there are few published accounts by non-official Western observers recording their first-hand impressions of Asia in these momentous times. It is thus the more surprising that this remarkable diary, so unlike anything else written by the Webbs, should have remained in manuscript form all these years. It was composed at the dawn of a millennial century in which global and regional warfare would make much unrecognisable in both East and West. Today, the waning century’s two world wars cast a shrinking shadow. Yet the sense of the world as a smaller place ushered in by them has led a once less-attentive Western audience to a keener interest in the multifarious goings-on of contemporary Asia; just as, throughout a still rapidly-modernising Asia itself, there is everywhere a fascination with the West and with Western perceptions of the East.
