As Michel Foucault said in 1980, “A whole history remains to be written of spaces ,” 1 and while other academic fields may be able to abide without confronting this challenge, theatre and performance are too profoundly saturated with spatial relationships to allow us to avoid engaging with space directly. Historians of theatre and performance may find this incitement particularly daunting because theatre space is an unusually complicated historical object, in part because it must be comprehended in relation to other categories of space, including the peculiar spaces theatre represents , and in part because time is always implicated on multiple levels in the statements historians make about theatre space. Ideas about time infiltrate historical writing as forms that inflect interpretations of the past—circular, positivistic, and chiliastic notions of time, for instance, give a particular bent to the thoughts that historians produce about a given development in the history of theatre space. Further, because theatre unfolds in practice—which is to say, it is an activity with a conspicuous duration—its own models of space are irreducibly tied to models of time. Perhaps most vexing, these aspects of theatre and performance history covertly infiltrate each other. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
