‘A North American sojourn’ charts the travails of Spanish settlers north of Mexico. Cabeza de Vaca had a poor military career — he was lost for nine years looking for ‘New Mexico’ and upon his return became embroiled in scandal. However, the record of his group's travels in North America — the Naufragios — provides an unsensational account of sensational events, and provided his contemporaries with a vision of a land which would not be explored again for another 150 years. He describes the shock, attraction and revulsion natives displayed in response to them. Their journey still inspired works of fiction centuries later.
