This chapter considers questions of media internationalisation and localisation in the contemporary age of globalised subscription video-on-demand ((S)VoD) platforms through a case study of Netflix’s French series Lupin (2020–). The author examines the production history of the series and the adaptation practices of Netflix’s collaboration with the French studio Gaumont to transform the source novels into a star vehicle for France’s best-known Black star, Omar Sy. Rather than a mannered heritage series, Lupin offers a hyper-contemporary, cosmopolitan and entertainment-oriented adaptation that fuses past and present. This chapter analyses how the series transforms the source novels into a contemporary tale of colonial exploitation, diaspora and social integration that speaks to different audiences around the world.
