This chapter discusses Musaeus’s Hero and Leander , a classic (and highly influential) tale of out-of-place desire composed in the fifth century CE. It is an extraordinary witness, in an era of Christian moralism, to the persistence of the novelistic tendency to see illicit, ‘dirty’ love in a positive light.
