Resumo

Bullying is a problem of global concern with most research focused on school-aged children. The current study examined the types of childhood bullying parents recalled as well as how they perceived effects of these experiences. A diverse sample of 250 U.S. parents completed a modified version of the Retrospective Bullying Questionnaire. Participants described an incident from their own school days in which they were bullied or witnessed bullying and reported on the perceived long-term effects of their own victimization experiences. Verbal bullying was the most common form parents reported both as victims and bystanders. Thematic analysis was conducted to examine the perceived impact of childhood victimization experiences on parents. Participants highlighted the impacts of bullying on (1) children and family, (2) self-esteem and confidence, (3) mental health, (4) future interactions and relationships, and (5) personal growth and development.
