For Virgil, the history of Rome was a chronicle of triumphs: ‘res Italas Romanorumque triumphos’. For Cicero, the triumph and its cult of victory were intrinsic to Roman identity: ‘ipse triumphus quam ob rem gratissimus populo Romano fuit atque iucundissimus? quia nihil est uictoria dulcius’ [Why was this triumph so popular and delightful to the Roman people? Because there is nothing sweeter than victory].1 Reverence for the republican military triumph long survived its transformation by the emperors and by Christianity. Though the ceremony was never static, even in republican times, certain features remain largely constant in historical and literary representations.2
