The 1820s were the decade when assisted migration emerged as a public measure to deal with the population explosion. Also recommended by some as the best means for dealing with economic and political unrest in the difficult years of Peterloo, emigration became central to political debate in the decade, not least because it was seen by some as a deflection from deep domestic difficulties. This new wave of emigration was the foundation of a massive British diaspora which gave license to settlement experiments that deeply impacted indigenous peoples around the globe.
