Resumo

Between 1974 and 1991, the West Indies cricket team reigned supreme. Between these years, the West Indies set many records including the longest unbeaten run in test history (27 matches 1982 to 1984) and managed a period of 15 years without losing a test series. Since then, a rapid decline has occurred. The purpose of this study is to examine the reasons as to why the West Indies cricket team has appeared to decline and has done so at such a rapid rate. The study looks for reasons beyond the populist idea that Americanization is to blame and identifies underlying political and historical factors that originate back to the formation of the West Indies, reasons that have been masked during the period of the team's success.
