Only a few attempts have been made to study working‐class conservatism in a sustained, textured, and many‐handed way. One of those attempts, in England in the decades from 1958 to 1977, sought to explain Tory voting by manual workers in terms of “deference” to wealth and rank. The results of that inquiry remain among the most thought‐provoking sources of insight into this enduringly pertinent issue.
